Dawn at Monument Valley (4 April)

It seemed like the whole hotel went to bed early last night in anticipation of the sunrise.  After carefully checking times (and time-zones) the alarm was set, just in case we slept in.  As it was, having left the curtains open, we woke just as the sky was beginning to lighten.

The light was still quite blue, and it was time to head out onto the terrace for more photos.  I got dressed and went outside, but many guests stayed on their balconies. The hotel glowed pink in the gentle dawn light, in the same way as the rocks did.

The colours changed constantly - minute by minute the light increased, gradually revealing more of the desert floor.

Finally, the sun broke above the horizon.

It was a powerful and almost primeval experience, with people united in watching the sun rise.  Barely a word was uttered outside; the only sound was the clicking of camera shutters.  It was at this point that I realised just how cold I was - time to head indoors for breakfast.
