Santa Barbara - The beach and MOXI (14 April)

Our last few drives are much shorter than the earlier ones in Arizona, so we arrived in Santa Barbara with plenty of time to explore.  We made straight for the pier - Stearn's Wharf - to admire the view back to Cabrillo Boulevard.  Not too shabby, I think you'll agree.

We spent some time on East Beach so that Tom could let off steam, and play chicken with the waves.

We were very struck by the elaborate voting system set up on the beach, asking tourists to throw their coins to express their preferences.

The wharf itself was also worthy of a picture.  Yes, it was possible to drive along the wharf ... and there was valet parking too!

Our best discovery by far was MOXI - the Museum of Exploration and Innovation.  We thought we might spend an hour or so there, but it ended up being three.  Every single exhibit had some practical or hands-on aspect, whether sending rockets up into the air, recording our own soundtrack to a film-clip, building racing cars, learning about pendulums, or making music.

It was a wonderful family experience - we all got stuck into the different activities, and what was so heart-affirming was the extent to which visitors simply chatted to each other to explain how things worked, or to recommend the next exhibit.

The whole building was uplifting - even the stairs offered encouragement.

Up on the roof there was a variety of activities to get stuck into - both a water area at the back (similar to the one at Herstmonceux Science Centre at home) and also a music area.  And part of the floor was, in fact, glass - our footsteps were visible two floors below.

The views back to the seafront were pretty good too.
